Looking for Cardiologist in Ranchi?
Your heart deserves the best treatment and care
The heart is an organ around the size of a fist, located just behind and slightly left of the breastbone. The heart is part of our body’s circulatory system and is made up of the atria, ventricles and valves. Its main function is to pump blood that is full of oxygen circulating throughout your body. Thus, your heart is crucial to your survival, so it is important to keep it healthy with a well-balanced diet and exercise, and avoid things that can damage it, like smoking.
Some common heart diseases are:
- Coronary Heart Disease – It is caused by the accumulation of plaque within the walls of the arteries that supply the myocardium. Angina pectoris/chest pain is a symptom of coronary heart disease.
- Rheumatic Heart Disease – It is a complication of rheumatic fever, which is more common in people in the age group of 5-15. The symptoms develop over a period of time and can progress to serious heart damage that can kill or cripple adolescents and young adults
- Heart Muscle Disease –referred to as Cardio Myopathy, it is caused when damaged heart muscles cause enlargement of heart. The heart’s ability to pump blood decreases causing backflow into the lungs and other parts of the body. Cardio Myopathy may be of three types:
- Hypertrophic Cardio Myopathy
- Dilated Cardio Myopathy
- Restrictive Cardio Myopathy
- Hypertensive Heart Disease –Prolonged high blood pressure can affect the heart muscles and blood vessels leading to Coronary Heart Disease or Left Ventricular Hypertrophy (LVH) (heart enlargement) and failure in the long run or blockage of the coronary blood vessels resulting in a heart attack.
- Pericardial Diseases – Caused by inflammation in the pericardium (tissues that surround the heart), due to infections, heart attack/surgery, trauma, or autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. Symptoms may include sharp pain in the chest, low grade fever and increased heart rate. Some common pericardial diseases are:
- Pericardial Effusion
- Constructive Pericarditis
Common Signs of Heart Diseases (Myocardial Infarction):
- Chest pain (radiating to the left arm or left side of the neck)
- Breathlessness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Palpitations
- Sweating
- Anxiety or an impending sense of doom
Women often experience atypical like shortness of breath, weakness, a feeling of indigestion and fatigue. Around a quarter of all myocardial infarctions are silent, without chest pain or other symptoms.
